    fraction simplify question

If I have sin( Pi x)/cos( Pi x)

I know that I cannot cancel the( Pi x) on the top and bottom, but in words what is the reason for this? because sin/cos is not defined?

    Thanks

    \displaystyle \frac{\sin(\pi x)}{\cos(\pi x)} = \tan(\pi x)

the arguments for trig functions are not "cancelable" ... yes, \frac{\sin}{\cos} has no meaning.
