Math Help - to find the original price

    to find the original price

    Current price is 500 . But it is arrived by deducting 60% from the original price. How I can calculate the original price Please help.

    Hi Alan

    If the item was reduced by 60% then you paid 40% so:
    500=40%
    1%=500/40
    100% (Full Price) = 500/40*100
    So the original price was 1250.

    Finally lets check our calculation:
    1250/100*60=750
    1250-750=500

    Here's an easy way of understanding it:

    \text{original} \times 0.4 = \$ 500
    Multiplying by 0.4 is the same as 40% of.

    \text{original} = \$ 500 \div 0.4

    Or: Let x be the original price. Then the price was decreased by 60% or .6x: x- .6x= (1- .6)x= .4x= 500 and now solve by dividing both sides by .4.
