I am having a problem solving is 4 a solution to 1/2 (y-2)+2= 3/8 (3y-4) not sure where to begin.

Maybe expand these brackets and group some like terms to solve.

Here's a kick start...

$\displaystyle \frac{1}{2}(y-2)+2 = \frac{3}{8}(3y-4)$

$\displaystyle \frac{y}{2}-1+2 = \frac{9y}{8}-\frac{12}{8}$

$\displaystyle \frac{y}{2}+1 = \frac{9y}{8}-\frac{12}{8}$

Or if you only need to know if 4 is a solution then substitute it into both LHS and RHS of the equation. Do you get the same result? - Sep 15th 2010, 02:36 PMskeeter
multiply both sides of the equation by 8 to clear the fractions ...

$\displaystyle 8\left[\frac{1}{2}(y-2)+2\right] = 8\left[\frac{3}{8}(3y-4)\right]$

$\displaystyle 4(y-2)+16 = 3(3y-4)$

take it from there? ...
