    Cross Multiply,

    x(x+2) = 12\cdot 4

    x^2+2x = 48

    x^2+2x-48=0

    Can you finish it now?

Or think about a common denominator between 4 and x. The only option is "4x." So multiply both sides by 4x. (You'll get what TPH got when he "cross multiplied.")

I prefer common denominators over cross multiplying because it can be applied in more places.
