    Talking Basic Percentage Problem

    Hey guys. Hopefully you can help me with this basic percentage problem.

    I need to divide 1.299 into 0.40 and then convert that to a percentage.

    How i do it at the moment is:

    First move the decimals over to the right in 1.299 to get a whole number.

    I then move the decimal the same amount of places to the right in 0.40.

    Then i do the long division. This is where i get unsure however. The answer in the book is 30.8%. which is close to what i get but not exactly and i'm not certain how i convert the final result of the division to a percentage at the end?

    The decimal expansion of 400/1299 has quite a long repetend, but rounded to three significant figures we get 0.308. To convert to percentage, simply multiply by 100 and slap a % sign on.

    % means "divided by 100" (per = "divided by" and cent = "100"). So 100% means 1, and if you have a value x, then

    x = x * 100% = (100 * x) %

    Thanks for the reply. That makes sense. It was the rounding and the zero after 3 in the division that confused me. I hadn't seen the case before where you get the the second division:

    1030/1299

    Which equals zero.

    So you put zero in the place value for hundredths on the top of the division and drop another zero down for the next division:

    10300/1299

    is that correct?

    The rounding i'm fine with. Just with the above i think i tried:

    1299/1030

    saw that it didn't go in (but i didn't put a zero for that place value in answer) so i dropped another zero and then divided getting seven giving me the following in my answer up until that point:

    00.37

    instead of 00.307.

    My bad :P

    Yep, that's correct. There's an online program that shows you long division with steps, it's pretty nice, the author of the program posts on this forum from time to time.
