# Thread: Article length:- word/page count

1. ## Article length:- word/page count

in printing an article of 24,000 words,a printer decides to usr 2 sizes of type. using a larger type,a printed page contains 900 words.Using a smaller type,a page contains 1200 words. the article is allotted 21 full pages in a magazine.how many pages must be in the smaller type?

2. Let number of small papers needed = x
Let number of large papers needed = y

$x+y = 21$
$y= 21-x$

$y(900) + x(1200) = 24000$

Sub for y:
$(21-x)(900) + x(1200) = 24000$

Solving for x gives $x=17$

Therefore 17 small papers are needed

Hello,

let x be the number of pages with 900 words per page
let y be the number of pages with 1200 words per page

Then you get a system of simultanous equations:

900x + 1200y = 24000
x + y = 21

Solve for x and y (I don't know which method you prefer, I would use substitution method here)

You should get x = 4 and y = 17
