In 1 hour Sally paints 1/4 house.
In 1 hour John paints 1/6 house.
In 1 hour John and Sally paint 1/4 + 1/6 = ...... house. Therefore the whole house gets painted in ...... hours.

If they were painting different houses at the same time,

Sally will have painted one and a half houses in 6 hours,
while John will have painted one.

Hence, they will have painted two and a half houses in 6 hours, while painting at the same time.
That's 5 houses in 12 hours.

So, it will take a fifth of that time to paint one house, working together.

4. yea thanks i got it!
1/4 + 1/6 = 1/x
5 = 12/x
x=12/5
x= 2.4 hours
which is aprproxamately 2 hours and 24 minutes!
