    Which function first?

    Hard to explain what I mean but typically is:
    \cos(4x^2+2)^4 = (\cos(4x^2+2))^4
    Or:
    \cos(4x^2+2)^4 = \cos( (4x^2+2)^4)

    The second is most correct.

    Also consider

    (\cos(4x^2+2))^4 =\cos^4(4x^2+2)
