Thread: How to divide time in minutes between 5 or less people? last one is should be equal

Im having trouble dividing the time between 5 people from 0240hrs to 0700hrs, I understand its 52minutes each. But the last one is 0602hrs - 0654hrs, still 6mins short. WHY IS THIS?

240hrs to 0700hrs = 4hrs and 20mins remaining
4hrs x 60mins = 240mins
240mins + 20mins = 260mins
260mins divided by 5(the number of people, could be 5,4,3,2) = 52mins each.

Rounded to 50mins i get the last one to 1hr.

1) 240hrs - 0330hrs, 2) 330hrs - 420hrs, 3) 420hrs - 510hrs, 4) 0510hrs - 0600hrs, 5) 0600hrs - 0700hrs (THE LAST ONE IS 1 HR WHY IS THIS?)

You mean this?

1) 0240 - 0332
2) 0332 - 0424
3) 0424 - 0516
4) 0516 - 0608
5) 0608 - 0700

Of course if you round, there will be some error.

I understand that it was 52 mins, but whats the best way of working this out fast? For example

240hrs + 52mins = best way to work out this answer?

I'm sure you can add and subtract time in Excel. I tried this on another spreadsheet program (OpenOffice.Org) and it worked.

I put the start time in cell A1, the end time in cell B1, the number of people in cell C1. Then in D1, I put in the formula
=(B1 - A1)/C1

I get a decimal as my answer, but that's okay, because it's just a decimal representing the number of minutes divided by 1440 (number of minutes in a day). Since the amount of time divided among 5 people was 52 minutes, in D1, it shows as 0.04 (which is 52/1440).

You can then reference cell D1 in figuring out the actual time divisions. Since the start time was already in cell A1, you could put in cell A2 the formula
=A1 + D1
and it will give you the time 03:32. To get the next time you could put in cell A3
=A2 + D1
and repeat the process.

In your head you can do: Add an hour, subtract eight minutes. Or you can do, Add an hour, subtract ten minutes, add two minutes.
