how to write an expression of someones age

    hi, this is my question:

James is X years old and his brother is 3 years younger. write an expression for their total age.

    would it be X-3 or would i have to do X-3 = X-3= 2X-3?

    Thanks

Well you ended up with the right answer after some wrong steps (or typos?). Break it down so you don't make mistakes:

    James's age: X
    His brother's age: X - 3

    Their total age = (James's age) + (His brother's age) = (X) + (X - 3) = 2X - 3
