    Preparation for A level Maths

    Hello everyone.

Whilst the GCSE maths results are not out till August, I did do a key skills level 2 on maths and got the equivalent of a GCSE grade C. (Hooray!) Though am motivated now t register onto A level maths, simply because of the challenge to try it, though it would have to be via distant learning course. (I work full time) Am doing some studying on what A level will involve before finally deciding to take up A level maths.

For those who had the experience of A level maths, passed it and such, what are the topics that need to be covered for A level and what topics should I have mastered before going to do A levels? And are there any sites that have practise papers for me to have a go on?

You could do worse than go with the Open University. You would not actually need an A-level in maths to start - the fact you've got your GCSE means you're mathematically literate enough to start on MST121. Or whatever it is nowadays, that's what it was in 2002 when I did it. Be warned, you'll get hooked. And the summer school for M203 is wonderful.

There aren't really that many topics for one to be familiar with before A-level Maths. Everything is usually started from
the beginning, most books start with basic fractions and then proceed to further topics, so that even students who did
not do GCSE Maths can do well provided that they are familiar with basic operations and have the tendency to work hard.
Even for the mechanics modules it starts out with basic trigonometric ratios and Pythagoras' theorem.
