    (More) Function Problems

YAY, Mariolee's making another function thread because he's an idito when it comes to calculus. Truth be told, I haven't taken Pre-Calc or Calc, so that's the reason I don't get most of this I suppose.

So here's another question for you guys:

A function is described by the equation f (x) = x2 + 5. The replacement set for the independent variable is {1, 5, 7, 12}. Which of the following is contained in the corresponding set for the dependent variable?

    A. 0
    B. 6
    C. 7
    D. 15

    Easy explanation please.

Substitute each independent variable for x and compare the result with the dependent variable list to look for a match.

It seems you mean that {1, 5, 7, 12} is the domain and we're asked to make a statement about the image. Just see how f maps each of {1, 5, 7, 12} and stop when you've found one that matches one of the answer choices.

Thanks guys. Actually, this is pretty easy, it's just that they worded the question weirdly.
