# Thread: Equation to predict deaths in 2006 and 2007

1. ## Equation to predict deaths in 2006 and 2007

The equation Y=-17777x +27,153 can be used to predict the number or gun deaths in the U.S. x years after 2000. x = 0 - 2000
x = 3 - 2003
x = 6 - 2006

1. Predict the # of gun deaths in 2006 and 2007

2. Predict what year gun deaths will be 12,937

1. Predict the # of gun deaths in 2006 and 2007
You can see that x = 6 represents 2006 and x = 7 represents 2007. Plug x = 6 into your equation Y=-17777x +27,153. What you'll get for Y will tell you the number of gun deaths in 2006. Now do the same for the year 2007.

BTW, you may want to check your equation again and see if you copied it right, because I'm getting negative numbers for my answers. I suspect you meant
$\displaystyle y=-1777x + 27153$.

2. Predict what year gun deaths will be 12,937
Since the variable y represents the number of gun deaths for a certain year x, this time plug in 12,937 for y, and then solve for x. Whatever number you get for x, add 2000 to it to get the year.
