    -1 = \frac{8 - 5}{y - 3}. Solve for y.

Then go through it step by step.

You want to solve -1= \frac{8- 5}{y- 3}. What is the first thing you would do?

    8-5 =3
    y-3=3

    3 divide 3 = 1

If you don't know what y is, how do you know that y- 3= 3? Are you saying that y= 6? Why?

    3 divide 3 = 1
So this is obviously wrong because it is supposed to be -1!

    Solve \frac{3}{y- 3}= -1
What would be your first step.
