Jack is twice as old as tom now. last year jack was 15 years older than tom.
What is jack's present age?

In a bag, there are toonies and quarters only. if there are six more toonies than quaters and the total amount of money is $39, how many toonies are there in the bag? Help, please. 2. If tom is x years old, then Jack is 2x years old.

That means, last year Jack was 2x-1 years old, and so Tom was (x-1) years old

then according to the question last year jack was 15 years older than tom was:

$2x-1 = (x-1) + 15 \implies x = 15$

so tom is 15 and jack is 30

(2) I had to google up to find that toonie means a $2 coin let there be x toonies and y quarters.. so let us write this equation in the form of cents: $200 x + 25 y = 3900$..........(I) x number of 200 cent coins(toonies) and y number of 25 cent coins (quarters) makes 3900 cents($39)

you are also given that there are 6 more toonies than quarters.. that is,

x = y+6 .... substitute x = y+6 in equation (I) you have:

$200(y+6) + 25y = 3900$

find y and then x(the number of toonies)!!
