Worded problem - getting and solving the equations.
the difference between two positive numbers is 4. If twice the square of the larger number is added three times the smaller, the sum 53.. Which one of the following is a step of the solution...

a. x=-3(+-)sq.rt 529 / 2

b. x= 3 (+-)21 / 4

c. x^2+3(x-4) =53

d. 2x^2 +3x-65=0

Thanks for the help ive been doing something wrong....

For $x>y$ you have

$x-y=4$ ...(1)

$2x^2+3y= 53$ ...(2)

Playing around with equation (1) we get $y= x-4$ substitute this in for $y$ in equation (2) giving

$2x^2+3(x-4)= 53$

Now simplify until you get one of your options.

In addition to pickslides answer you can discard the negative value of x since you're told it must be positive
