Thread: Solution to a Tricky System

1. Solution to a Tricky System

Q. Find values of a and b such that (2, -1) is a solution of the system.

{ax - by = 12
{bx + ay = -1

Please explain how you got to the answer as I don't even have the slightest clue how to do this one. Thank you!

If (2,-1) is a solution to the system, then x=2 and y=-1. Subsitute these values in your question, you have:

$2a+b=12$

$2b-a = -1$

Can you find a and b now?

3. Ah! Got it now. Thank you very much sir. Can't believe it was that simple, haha. May I ask one more question?
