Jeremy wants to buy a new computer. The saleswoman says he can make a down payment and then pay for the computer in installments.

Here is a formula that describes this scenario:

x=t-yz

x-amount down
y-money each month
z-number of months
t-total price

what we want to do is get the equation into the form t=...
remember that whatever you do on the right side of the equals sign you must also do on the left side:

.....x=t-yz .................Lets add yz to both sides
yz+x=t-yz+yz.............The -yz+yz cancels out
yz+x=t......................or
.....t=x+yz

just solve for y

t=x+yz
t-x=x+yz-x
t-x=yz

.t-x.......yz
---- = ----
..z..........z

.t-x.......
---- = y
..z..........
