Another solve for X problem help

Six times a positive number when added to the square of a number will produce 16. What is the number?

    I have no answer key...sorry.

let x be the number, then:

    6x+x^2 =16

    So x(6+x)=16,

and then trial and error gives x=2.

but...plugging in X to check answer

    RonL.

If you plug 8 into the equation x(6+x) = 16....it does not equal 16. I get

8(6+8) = 16 (but that does not equal??)

    Have I lost the plot?
