I need to verify lxl+lyl= 1 . I have set up the four cases: X greater/equal to 0 and y is greater/equal to 0 , x is greater/equal to 0 and y is less than 0, x is less than o and y is greater/equal to 0 , and x is less than 0 and y is less than 0... Im having a hard time verifying these.. help please??

I don't know, but the triangle inequality may come in handy somewhere $|x+y| \leq |x|+|y|.$

What do you mean by "verify |x|+ |y|= 1"? It is clearly NOT true for all x and y. Please state the entire problem. Is it possible that you want to graph that equation or determine for what (x, y) it is true?
