Hello sarahhIf everyone plays everyone else, then all possible pairs of players must be included in the set of games. So we simply need the number of possible pairs that can be formed from the available players.
If there are players, the number of ways of choosing the first player to make a pair to play one another is ; and, since there are then players left to choose from, there are ways of choosing his/her opponent. So the number of possible ways of choosing two players in order is .

I don't think I've assumed it's , have I? I let it be , and then set up an equation, the solution of which was .I though of doing the ordered pairings but if you didn't know it was 8 it would be hard to deduce--
Trial and error, perhaps? Start with 2 players: that's 1 match. Then 3 players: 3 matches. And so on... until you get 28 matches.is there a more elementary way of solving it too?
