    Manually constructing a parabola/hyperbola?

I don't know if this is the right part of the forum to post this in(please move it if I'm wrong mods), but I have to ask any way.
Does anyone know a good method for constructing a parabola or hyperbola using a pencil and graph paper?

I've attached the constructions of parabola and hyperbola from my own math book from 1957. (Computum was a kind of gadget to determine astronomic data )

I know it probably isn't relevant right now, but in case you are interested, is a really cool way to draw parabolas. As long as your axes are perpendicular (as opposed to the instructions which say the angle between them doesn't matter), you will get a parabola.
Not much use, but pretty cool!
