    Absolute Values Radical Expressions

    Why is it that you have to put an absolute value sign for the answer of:

    √((x-5)^2)

    But not for:

    √ ((x-5)^4)

    because \sqrt{(x-5)^4} = (x-5)^2 > 0 for all x w/o using absolute value
