" A headline in the September 23, 2003, North County Times read “Larger Class Sizes Not Swell for Escondido, Calif., Teacher, Students.” Classes are larger this year because the district didn’t hire as many teachers as it had in the past, despite the fact the number of students grew to 7,600- an increase of 1.93%. A. What was the enrollment last year? Round to the nearest whole number. B. How many more students are attending this year? "
Let x = number of students, or enrollment, before.
"....the number of students grew to 7,600- an increase of 1.93%."
That means 7600 is the enrollment now.
(7600 -x) / x, in percent , equals 1.93%
(7600-x)/x = 0.0193
Clear the fraction, multiply both sides by x,
7600 -x = 0.0193x
7600 = 0.0193x +x
7600 = 1.0193x
x = 7600/1.0193 = 7456 students
Therefore,
A) Last year the enrollment was 7,456 sudents. -----answer.
B) There are 7600 -7456 = 144 more students enrolled this year. ----answer.
