    Simplify help

    Me and fractions have always been sworn enemies, till this very day I have trouble with them.

    So I suppose to simplify
    -5.1
    ____

    1.7

    Now the answer is said to be negative three
    I just want to know how do you get -3, any help?

    5.1 is a multiple of 1.7:

    \dfrac{-5.1}{1.7} = \dfrac{(-3) \cdot 1.7}{1.7}

    Now cancel the 1.7:

    \dfrac{(-3) \cdot 1.7}{1.7} = \dfrac{-3}{1} = -3

    Or you could use long division.
    ..........-3
    1.7 ----5.1
    ...........5.1
    ................0

    r=0
    answer=-3

    (only reason I mention is because for higher numbers and decimals it is easier)
