Is math hard, or is it just me?

I'm not sure if this is the right section, but I am in Pre-Algebra, and this is what our teacher assigned us.

This is one of the questions I was stuck on.

We have to use a2+b2=c2 formula...basically the pythagorean Theorem.

Billy and Sam drew a scaled map of their town to determine who lives closer to the Arcade, a favorite week end meeting place for Billy and Sam.The following grid shows where Billy and Sam live and also where the Arcade is located. Each unit on the grid represents 1/2 mile

1. How far is Sam's house from the arcade?

2. How far is Billy's House from the arcade?

3. How far do Sam and Billy live from one another?

From the arcade to Sams house you can see a right angle triangle:

Across 2 units up 3 units therefore the distance using pythag equals:

2 squared + 3 squared = distance to sams squared

From the arcade to Billys house you can see another right angled triangle:

Across 4 units up 2 units therefore the distance using pythag equals:

4 squared + 2 squared = distance to billys squared

you should get the result from here...

Pythagorean Theorem in 2nd grade!! Wow!

Are you using a calculator? Do you know how to find the square root of a number?

In any case we're not here to do all the work for you. You must show some effort on your own.

As Joel pointed out, the distance from the Arcade to Sam's house is found by finding the hypotenuse of the right triangle formed when you move right 2 units and up 3 units. Since each grid unit is 1/2 mile, you would be traveling right 1 mile and up 1.5 miles.

$d^2=1^2+1.5^2$. Do the math. Find d.

From the Arcade to Billy's house, travel left 4 units and up 2 units. In miles, that would be left 2 miles and up 1 mile.

$d^2=2^2+1^2$. Do the math. Find d.

From Billy's house to Sam's house travel right 6 units and up 1 unit. In miles, that would be right 3 miles and up .5 miles.

$d^2=3^2+.5^2$. Do the math. Find d.
