# Math Help - Word Problem

1. ## Word Problem

In the last student election, Tara received 45% of the votes cast. Her only opponent, Kimberly, received 3,949 votes. How many people voted for Tara in the election?

2. You need to find $y$ the amount of votes Tara recieved given $y = x - 3949$ where $x$ is the amount of votes in total.

So we must find $x$ first

$55\% \times x = 3949$

$\frac{55}{100} \times x = 3949$

Can you take it from here?

3. I think I got it...

.55x = 3,949

which means x = 7,180 and.....

7,180 - 3,949 = 3,231?

edit for a thank you.

4. Looks fine to me.
