    Logic problem help (picture/table included)

Hey! I have this logic problem and I just can't figure it out. I was never good at logic puzzles and sodoku and things like that. This is what I have so far:

Here it the worksheet. It says Official Pencil Puzzles & Word Games February 2000 page 60 if that helps...

I really hope you can help me figure this out. Thank you so much! I REALLY appreciate it.

Perhaps like Sudoku there are multiple ways of solving this, but this is my solution (that adheres to the 11 requirements) and my thought process:

First, use the position clues to order which colors, names and animals are on which rows:

    1. Annie Katie Faith
    Elephant, Snake, Fox
    Blue, Black, Green

    2.
    Octopus, Racoon, Seal
    Ozzy, Chacha, Googie
    Gold, Maroon, Gray

    3.
    Pig, Llama, Horse
    RIchie, Booboo, Dandy
    Tan, Peach, Red

Second, using fact #7, you are able to tell that the first item in the third row has to be the red doll.

Third, this is where there are branches to the puzzle, where you will either guess right or wrong - I saw no other logically way of figuring out which way to start so you can just try them all. #4 says that the maroon animal is to the right of Googie, which means the maroon animal is not Googie, and it can not occupy the first spot in the second row. Maroon must either be in the 2nd spot or the 3rd spot on the second shelf. Choosing the 2nd spot, means Googie must be in the first spot, and the Fox must be in the 2nd spot in the first row.

Fourth, again you have another branch to go off off - Where to place ChaCha. ChaCha can either be in the 2nd spot or the 3rd spot since Googie occupies the 1st spot in the second row, based on our choose of where to put maroon. If you put ChaCha in the 2nd spot, then by #11, Dandy must be in the 2nd spot in row three. With ChaCha and Googie placed in the second row, there is only Ozzy left to go in the 3rd spot in the second row.

Fifth, knowing the place of Ozzy, we now know - by #5 - the place of the blue animal and the Llama.

6th, here we make another choice, but its one whose error (if you place wrong), you will see quickly - where to place Richie? Richie can go in either the 3rd or 1st spot of our third row, since we already placed Dandy from above. Choosing Richie to go into the 1st spot, will place Booboo in the third spot, which will turn out to be an error. Thus Richie has to go in the 3rd spot, which only leave BooBoo for the 1st spot in the third row. We also know that Richie, the tan animal and the horse are in the third row - and that neither is common. We also know that red is already in the 1st spot, so tan (since it can not go with red or with Richie) must be in the 2nd spot in the third row. That then leaves the Horse ("Richie, the horse, the tan animal. . .") for the 1st spot, peach in the 3rd spot in the third row (only color left), and the pig as the animal in the 2nd spot in the third row.

7th, from #8 we know that the seal is above BooBoo, and below the black animal - which forces the seal into the 1st spot in row two, and the black animal into the 1st spot in row one. We also know, from #1 that the Octopus is above the pig and below Annie, which puts Annie into the 2nd spot in row one, and the octopus into the 2nd spot in row two. This then, if you have a diagram going, leaves only the racoon to be placed into the 3rd spot in row two.

8th, from #3 we know that "Chacha, the raccoon, and the gold animal. . ." are not on the same doll, and we've already placed ChaCha and the raccoon, therefore the gold animal must go in the 1st spot in row two - which leaves only gray to go into the 3rd spot in row two.

9th, from #10 Faith is above the gray animal, and is thus placed into the 3rd spot in row one. Now if Faith must be placed there, Katie can only be placed in the 1st spot in row one. We also know, from #9: "Katie, the elephant, and the green animal. . ." are not the same doll. The elephant can only go into the 3rd spot in row one (since it can not go with Katie, and the Fox is already in the 2nd spot), and green must go in the 2nd spot in row one, since it is the only place left for a color. That leaves only our last doll (but the first doll Margie received), the snake, which must go in appropriately enough the 1st spot in row one.

And there you have it. It's not as daunting once you start recognizing that there are only a few spots in the reasoning that offer latitude in what choices you can make. Once you try one and it doesn't pan out, scratch it off and go back to where you know you are good.

Wow, thank you so much! I kept working on it after I posted it and I got it wrong, and I broke the first rule. Thank you for explaining everything, it really helped me expirience the process of doing puzzles like this one. I am sure I can get the next one following this procedure. I really appriciate your help.

Also, congrats on being thanked 100 times!
