From what I can gather:

The gradient is, by definition equal to change in y over change in x:

$m = \frac{\Delta y}{\Delta x}$

As the x and the y axis are perpendicular this will form a right-angled triangle with L as the hypotenuse. Since the ratio of m does not change trig can be applied and so in this case

$tan(x) = \frac{opp}{adj} = m$

Therefore $m = tan(21.8)$ which should be about 0.4
