    notation

    x ^ -1/2 = $\displaystyle

not sure how this could become a surd since we don't know the value of x.

but this can be rewritten as $\displaystyle \frac{1}{\sqrt{x}}$ or $\displaystyle \frac{1}{x^{\frac{1}{2}}}$
