# Thread: Is this correct?

1. ## Is this correct?

Solve using the addition and multiplication principles:

13/5a + 9/4 = 37/8
13/5a + 9/4 - 9/4 = 37/8 - 9/4
13/5a = 28/4
5/13 * 13/5a = 28/4
a = 28/4 * 5/13
a = 140/52

Please let me know if I'm doing this right.

Thank you!

2. Method is correct, but you need to have a common denominator when adding or subtracting fractions. So instead of $\frac{37}{8}-\frac{9}{4}$ it should be $\frac{37}{8}-\frac{18}{8}$

you did not subtract $\frac{37}{8}-\frac{9}{4}$ correctly

the correct answer is $\frac{19}{8}$ try reworking the problem with this information

4. So it would be

13/5a = 37/8 - 18/8

5/13 * 13/5a = 19/8

then

a = 19/8 * 5/13

a = 95/104

OR I am just out of this world!

Let me know if I got it right, please!

5. THat's correct

6. Can I simplify it any further?

7. THANK YOU TWO VERY MUCH!
