    One simple process problem

    27 - 256 divided by 4^2

    I get... ( 27- 256 divided by 64 = -3578 125)...I know t's wrong but-

    I believe I forgot to divide first.

    So it's probably 23.

    27 - 4 = 23

    Do you mean:

    (27-256)/(4^2)

    or:

    27 - (256/(4^2))

    or ....

    but whichever way ... 4^2=16.

    It is still ambiguous. Add brackets to make the meaning clear.

    Given the numbers involved it almost certainly is wanting:

    27 - (256/(4^3)) = 27 - 256/64 = 27 - 4 = 23.

    But this is guess work on my part, for all I know I am wasting my time
    on the wrong problem.

    So go for an answer something like:

    Assume that:

    27 - 256 : 4^3

    means:

    27 - [256 : (4^3)]

    which is:

    27 - [256/(4^3)] = 27 - 256/64 = 27 - 5 = 23.

    If you need a justification for making this assumption it can be:
    " ':' is a variant form of division '/', and in most conventions for
    the precedence of arithmetic operators '/' takes precedence over
    '+' and '-' "

    I don't want to pick at you but to me it should read like this:

    27 - [256/(4^3)] = 27 - 256/64 = 27 - 4 = 23.
