Lets say we are looking at a neighborhood with a price range of $200-270.

Now we are looking at two other neighborhoods with a price range of $200-249 and $250-299.

1. What percent of 200-270 is contained within 200-249?
2. What percent of 200-270 is contained within 250-299?

e.g. 200-249 contains roughly 5/7 or 71% of 200-270$

My co worker says the answers are
1. 71%
2. 29%

Would some one please explain?

It would seem to me that you are trying to find the ratio of the overlapping parts to the total parts.

1. 200 to 249 contains 50 parts while 200 to 270 contains 70 parts. The overlap is 50. The ratio is 5/7.

2. 250 to 299 contains 50 parts, but 200 to 270 only overlaps by 20. So, the ratio would be 2/7
