Hi,

This may seem silly but when you square the exponential function, so (e^x)^2, it does just give e^2x, right?

Yes, this is correct, and not just for e: for any $\displaystyle a,b,c \in \mathbb{R}, \

(a^b)^c = a^{bc}$

Maybe you should go over some exponent rules to be more confident:
