    not an equation

this is not an equation, you need an '='
do you need to multiply them out?

    [a+c(x-1)] [a+(x-1)]

    a^2 + a(x-1) + c*a(x-1) + c(x-1)^2
    a^2 + (a+c*a)(x-1) + c(x-1)^2

    or

    c(x-1)^2 + a(c+1)(x-1) + a^2
