Can i write this..

$\displaystyle -[\frac{\lambda - 48}{-4}]$

as $\displaystyle \frac{\lambda - 48}{4}$

?? Is that correct?

i am unsure as to wether the negative in front changes only the denominator and not the -48.

Yes that's right . Effectively the negative sign out the front means multiply the fraction by -1.
