# Thread: solving systems word problem

1. ## solving systems word problem

this question seems easy but i can't get it right.

The sum of two numbers is 752, and their difference is 174. What are the two numbers?

this is what i did:
x+y=752
x-y= 174

from this i got x=454 and y=298

the book says 463 and 298 are the solutions.
is the book wrong cause i can't seem to get the 463?

x+y=752
x-y= 174
-----------
2x = 926
x = 463

SUBTRACTION:
When you SUBTRACT the two equations, y=289. maybe a typo in the book?

---------- "add" the two equations ... the y terms add up to 0.
2x = 926
x = 463

from this i got x=454 and y=298

...

4. oh man. thanks.
