1. Consecutive Integers

The square of the sum of two consecutive odd integers is 34. Find the two integers.

2. Lets call the first odd number $2x+1$ so the next odd number is $2x+3$

The square of there sum looks like this

$(2x+1+2x+3)^2$ making this equal to 34 we get

$(2x+1+2x+3)^2 =34$

Now doing some simplifying

$(4x+4)^2 =34$

Now you can just expand the left hand side and solve the resulting quadratic

Using 2x - 1 and 2x + 1 makes life a bit easier ....
