Lets call the first odd number 2x+1 so the next odd number is 2x+3

The square of there sum looks like this

(2x+1+2x+3)^2 making this equal to 34 we get

    (2x+1+2x+3)^2 =34

    Now doing some simplifying

    (4x+4)^2 =34

Now you can just expand the left hand side and solve the resulting quadratic

    Using 2x - 1 and 2x + 1 makes life a bit easier ....
