    ratio problems

    Hey I'm having trouble with a ratio problem :

    when mixing a quantity of dyes four different colours are used in the ratio of 7:3:19:5. if the mass of the first dye used is 3.5 grams determine the total mass of the dyes used.

    Thanks

    when mixing a quantity of dyes four different colours are used in the ratio of 7:3:19:5. if the mass of the first dye used is 3.5 grams determine the total mass of the dyes used.

    7/3 = w/x = 3.5/x,

    x = 3.5(3)/7 = 1.5 grams

    3/19 = x/y = 1.5/y,

    y = 1.5(19)/3 = 9.5 grams

    19/5 = y/z = 9.5/z,

    z = 9.5(5)/19 = 2.5.

    Total mass of dye = w + x + y + z = ?

    first dye = 7 parts. It weighs 3.5 grams therefore 1 part would equal 3.5 / 7 or 0.5 grams

    Therefore the mass of each dye is the following:

    7 = 7 * 0.5 = 3.5 grams
    3 = 3 * 0.5 = 1.5 grams
    19= 19 * 0.5 = 9.5 grams
    5 = 5 * 0.5 = 2.5 grams
