    See this. Look at the Quotient and remainder section (click show steps).

    Hello, agent2421!

    If you know Synthetic Division, the problem is straight-forward.
    So where is your difficulty?

    Find the quotient and remainder by synthetic division for: .$\displaystyle (x^3 + 2x^2 - 7x + 1) \div (x - 1)$

    . . $\displaystyle \begin{array}{cccccc}1 & | & 1 & 2 & \text{-}
    7 & 1 \\ & | & & 1 & 3 & \text{-}4 \\ & & -- & -- & -- & -- \\
    & & 1 & 3 & \text{-}4 & \text{-}3 \end{array}$

    The quotient is: .$\displaystyle x^2 + 3x - 4$

    The remainder is: .$\displaystyle -3$
