    function of a log

    log x + log (x-17) = log (14x)

    so from what i have learned so far.. i would say x2-17x=14x

    but that seems bizarre, no?

    Correct (and I'm not wrong this time).

    x^2 - 17x = 14x => x^2 - 31x = 0 => x(x - 31) = 0.

    Therefore x = 0 (rejected because log 0 is not defined) or x = 31 (accepted).
