# Math Help - Grouping symbols help?

1. ## Grouping symbols help?

In problems #1 and #2, Insert grouping symbols so that the numerical expression has the values given in parts (a), (b), (c).

#1: -3 * 4 - 5

(a) 3 "I think the answer to (a) is -3 (4 -5 )which would =3 "

(b) -17 "I think the answer to (b) is (-3.4) -5 which would = -17 "

(c)-7

Problem #2: 7 - 5^2 +1

(a) 5

(b) -19

(c) -17 "I think the answer to (c) is ( 7 - 5^2 ) + 1= -17 "

Hello,

#1.(c) $-7=-((3 \cdot 4)-5)$

#2.(a) $5=(7-5)^2+1$

#2. (b) $-19=7-(5^2+1)$

All results you have mentioned are correct.

problem #1

correct answer is b -3*4-5= -12 -5 = -17
rule is (do arithmatic operation as per order of BODMAS
B - Bracket
O - of
D - Divsion
M - Multiplication
S - Subtraction)

Problem #2

7-5^2+1 = 7 -25 +1 = -18+1 = -17 is correct answer
