    converting a fraction

    I am doing a problem for calc 2 and in the solution guide they use a rule that i am pretty certain is algebra, however i do not remember learning it. If anyone could tell me anything about the rule it would be greatly appreciated

    (U-1)/(U^2)=(1/U)-1/U^2)

    \frac{U-1}{U^2} = \frac{U}{U^2} - \frac{1}{U^2} = \frac{1}{U} - \frac{1}{U^2}
