    Find the width of the frame.
    Say the frame has a width w. Then the outer length of the frame is 12 + 2w and the outer width of the frame is 16 + 2w. Thus the outer perimeter of the frame is
    P = 2(12 + 2w) + 2(16 + 2w) = 56 + 8w = 72 in.

    Thus w = 2 in.
