    The table below shows the number of defective electronic components per lot for 500 lots that have been tested .

    1
    2
    3
    4
    5
    6 or more

    Corresponding relative frequency
    0.042
    0.054
    0.392
    0.318
    0.148
    0.014
    0.032

    For the lots with defective components of more than 5 , the mean number of defective components per lot is 6.4 . Find the mean number of defective electronic components per lot for the given 500 lots.

    this is what i did .

    for the mean for ( 6 or more ) : x=16(6.4)=102.4

    so overall mean = ( 1+2+3+4+5+102.4)/500 =0.24

    Am i right ??

    I don't think so. How does this use all of the frequency data given. I think you might need to calculate (0)(0.042) + (1)(0.054) + (2)(0.392) + (3)(0.318) + (4)(0.148) + (5)(0.014) + (6.4)(0.032).
