Probability!

THe probability that a married woman watches a certain tv show is 0.4, and the probability that her wife watches the show is 0.5. The TV viewing habits of a husband and wife are clearly not independant (why??). In fact, the probability that a married woman watches the show given that her husband does is 0.7. FInd the probability that:

a. Both husband and wife watch the show.
b. The husband watches the show given that his wife watches it.

I'm having trouble with this, and distinguishing between independent and conditional events. Thanks!

I assume you meant her husband.

When I watch tv, I usually end up getting stuck without the remote, so I end up watching whatever my brother watches. Therefore, what I watch isn't independent from what my brother watches.

a. P( h and w ) is the husbands probability times the wife's probability, so:
hw=p(handw)

thus: (.5)w=P(handw)

now remember, if the husband watches the show, than the wife has a 70 percent chance instead of 40: (.5)(.7)=.35=P(handw)

Yes indeed, they are equivalent expressions.
Intersection mean ‘AND’ in sets: in H and in W, H and W both happen.
