You must solve $\displaystyle \int_{1}^{a} 1 - \frac{x}{4} \, dx = \frac{1}{2}$, where a is the median value .....

$\displaystyle \left( a - \frac{a^2}{8} \right) - \left( 1 - \frac{1}{8} \right) = \frac{1}{2}$ ......

I get $\displaystyle a = 4 - \sqrt{5}$ as the only value lying in the interval [1, 3].
