It's not a rigid thing, in fact I have just had a referees report back on a paper of mine where s/he has changed standard error to standard deviation throughout.Quote:
2.a Why we call the standard deviation of the sample statistic as standard error of the statistic?
But I'm sure that your notes tell you why the standard deviation of an estimator is called the standard error, at least for the purposes of your course.

For question 1 ask yourself two questions:
1. Are the two estimators unbiased?
2. If they are unbiased which has the smaller standard deviation? If one or both are biased which has the least mean square error?
