# Thread: Comparing Variances of the Sample Means

1. ## Comparing Variances of the Sample Means

Hi,

"Suppose that two populations have equal population variances but have different sizes: $N_1=100,000, N_2=10,000,000$. Compare the variances of the sample means for a sample of size $n=25$. Is it easier to approximate the mean of a smaller population?"

Where do I even begin?

Hey SC313.

What do the N's refer to? (Are you dealing with finite populations as opposed to infinite ones)?

Hi Chiro!

N is the population size $N_1=10,000, N_2 is 10,000,000$.

And the populations are finite!

Thanks!
