Thread: Probability of winning raffle ticket in euromillions draw

I am looking to find the odds of buying a winning ticket in the recent euromillions draw (not the jackpot at fixed odds) but to get a raffle ticket correct. There were 80,000,000 tickets sold and the organisers were giving away 100 prizes of £1,000,000 drawn using a random number generator. If i had 1000 tickets what would the odds be of me having a winner.

There are 100 winning tickets and 8000000 tickets so the probability of any one ticket would be [tex]\frac{100}{80000000}=0.00000125. If you buy 1000 tickets your probability of winnng a prize is or 0.125%. If the total value of all the 100 prizes is £1000000 (not euros?) then your "expected return" is (0.00125)(1000000)= £1250. Of course, The cost of each ticket will be more than £1.25 because the people setting up the raffle are not going to use money.

Thanks for that, the raffle draw was only in the uk as a special for the olympic opening ceremony, there were infact 100 prizes of £1m each so total raffle prize money was £100m. Each ticket cost £2 you still put numbers on as you would in any lottery and had a chance of winning that also. they raffled of 100 prizes based on ticket numbers sold guaranteeing 100 winners. I got a few mates together and put 1000 tickets on and estimated odds of 800 to 1. after the draw when we had only won £376 a few people argued saying the odds i gave were completely wrong and i tricked people in to it.
From your working is a chance of 0.125% a 800/1?

It is 1/800, if that's what you meant.
